Libertadores Qualifying Begins
Colon, playing in only their second Copa, won the first leg of their home and away tie against Universidad Catolica of Chile by a score of 3-2. This gives Colon a slim edge heading into the return trip to Chile, only needing a draw to advance to the group stages.

Copa Libertadores Qualifying
By: Jeremy |The other big race this season is for the three at-large spots for the 2010 Copa. Vélez are in as champs of the Clausura 09 and Estudiantes make it in as defending champs without taking one of Argentina’s five spots, giving Argentina six teams this season.

Things are a Slight Bit Clearer Now
By: Jeremy |The title race just got sorted out a bit more this weekend. There are only a handful of teams mathematically alive now and maybe four have any kind of shot at the title.

Copa Libertadores Update
By: Jeremy |With all the talk about who will win the league this year, I forgot to post about the 2010 Libertadores qualifying. Argentina is allotted five slots and get a bonus sixth slot this year as Estudiantes gain automatic entry as reigning champs. Of the five, Vélez are in as winners of last season, so that leaves four [...]

Down to five matches now and the weekend’s action has knocked a few more apples off the tree. With five, or in some cases four, matches left to play, seven teams are still realistically at least marginally in the hunt for the championship. Vélez are eight points back and have to be considered a real long shot. [...]

The Title Race
By: Jeremy |Ok, I’ve been waaaay too negligent with this blog, so lets see if I can try and rectify that by at least focusing on the the title race, and maybe even the other big race, the one for the bottom.

Matthaus to Coach Racing?
By: Jeremy |I saw this over on ESPN, so I am not sure what to make of it, but it appears that the Racing president Rodolfo Molina announced that ex-German captain Lothar Matthaus will be arriving in Argentina this week in time to watch Racing face Newell’s and then be taking over the management of the club.

Do or Die in El Centenario
By: Jeremy |The match should get underway in about 15 minutes or so. For just about the biggest match between the two countries since the 1930 World Cup Final in the same stadium, the weather has taken a nasty turn, cold and wet. The scenarios: Argentina wins and they automatically qualify. A draw and anything less than an Ecuador [...]

Argentina 1 – Peru 1 – Palermo 1
By: Jeremy |After a decade in the wilderness, Argentina and Boca’s current favorite son returned to the Selection and snatched all three points for the Albiceleste in a crucial (is that an understatement?) World Cup qualifier against Peru.

Boca's wildly fluctuating form continues
Newell's 4-2 Boca
Ok, be honest. Even with all our defensive flaws, who really saw that coming? For those of you nodding your head up and down as you read this - really?
Well, if you are claiming that you did, I am going to need to see written, verified, proof.

Round 3 Preview: Off to Rosario and Newell's
On Friday, Alves had this to say regarding Newell's potent aerial threat and our inability to deal with potent aerial threats:
"We have it in mind, but we must not create any psychosis or anything like that."
What he's trying to say is, "If they get a free-kick, we're just going to cross our fingers and hope for the best."

For better or worse, the standard has been set
Boca 3-1 Lanus
Well, that was more like it, wasn't it Boca Offsiders? A crushing win over a title rival under conditions of extreme meteorological duress. Yes, you read right. As if playing a Copa Libertadores participant and the best traveling side in the league and wasn't enough of a challenge, Mother Nature decided to up the stakes by unleashing a, what can only be described as Biblical, deluge upon, not just La Bombonera, but I'm guessing the majority of Argentinian land which was playing host to a football match today.

Preview: Martin Digs Playing Lanus...
If a reporter was to ever ask Martin Palermo the question, "If you could choose a team to play against everyday, who would it be?", he would surely answer, without a moments hesitation, "Lanus, Lanus, Lanus!"

Clausura 2010: River Plate 0 - 1 Banfield
Apparently Boca was worse than we thought.
Expectations of seeing a new and improved River came crashing back to earth Sunday afternoon after a 1-0 loss to Banfield to kickoff the 2010 Clausura. Signs of the River that outplayed Boca last week were absent in a boring, lifeless performance by los millonarios that was reminiscent of the days under Pipo Gorositio, and served as a reminder that there is much work to be done before this team can be considered a contender.
Banfield looked every bit like the side that won the '09 Apertura, outmatching River in nearly every position; only key saves from keeper Daniel Vega prevented a blow-out. Instead, el taladro scored just once in the 74th minute, more than enough to hand River their first loss of the season.

Ho Hum
Well that match stunk. Another nil-nil draw, this time to start the season against Independiente. So instead of a rousing start to the new season, the team run out and lay another egg.

The Naivety of the Football Fan
Argentinos Juniors 2-2 Boca Juniors
Hello Boca Offsiders. After taking in Boca’s frustrating opening encounter against Argentinos Juniors at what was a, according to Abel Alves anyway, suspiciously ‘small’ Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, I must admit that I feel more than a little embarrassed.

Preview: Ar-Ar-Ar-Ar-Arrrrgentinos Juniors
We may have lost only once in our last eight meetings with Argentinos, but the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona hasn't exactly been a fun place to visit in recent years. The last time we caught the bus home with three points in our pocket was back in '06.

Clausura 2010: Yes We Can!
Hello Boca Offsiders. I'm pumped today, and I think you know why. No, it's not because I just watched Serena Williams successfully defend her women's singles crown at the Australian Open after a genuine slog-fest with Justin Henin. I'm pumped because, almost seven weeks after we defeated Banfield at La Bombonera to end a dreadful Apertura 2009 campaign, the league is just about back. Clausura 2010 has already begun for some, and in less then 36 hours, Los Xenienes will kick-off against Argentinos Juniors at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Buenos Aires.
