ex-River hero retires in Chile
By: Jeremy |Just saw this in the news today. It appears that Marcelo Salas, whose first spell in River brought several titles, is retiring today after his U de Chile side was ousted in the quarter-finals.
Friday night recap
By: Jeremy |Two games tonight. Both finished with a 1-0 scoreline (techinically a 1-0 and a 0-1).
In a game that both teams tried so hard to give away, Banfield won on a last second header by Victor Lopez away at Independiente. This one I actually watched. Video is after the jump.
Gearing up for the Championship
By: Jeremy |This weekend could see another of the title challengers drop out of the race. Velez and Newell’s are out, being 6 and 7 points adrift with 3 games to go. Lanus are hanging on to fourth place, four points behind Boca Juniors and two behind San Lorenzo and Tigre. Failure to take [...]
Bye-Bye Scotland
By: Jeremy |Looking back at the game, it seems clear to me that Scotland wouldn’t qualify for 2010 from South America. Argentina dominated them for the first 20-25 minutes of the game, and then dropped back into cautious mode.
To me the standouts were Maxi Rodriguez and Javier Zanetti. Zanetti is looking like an ageless wonder [...]
Awating the Start of the Diego Era
By: Jeremy |Just twenty minutes or so until match time. I’ve got to admit that I am starting to get excited about Diego taking the reins of the Selection. When I first heard the news, I thought it was potentially disastrous, and I still do, but this is Maradona we are talking about here. [...]
Two Friday Night Games
By: Jeremy |Two games tonight to start match day 15. Banfield and Lanus drew 1-1 and in a relegation battle, Gimnasia (LP) took three points from San Martin (T) with a late goal from Mariano Messera, who came on at the 30 minute mark in the second half to score the only goal of the game.
Saturday [...]
La Novela that has become the Selection.
By: Jeremy |Diego wants Ruggeri. Ruggeri wants Diego. Seems like a match made in heaven, except for Don (in the mafia sense, not in the Spanish honorific sense) Julio Grondona. Grondona is vehemently opposed to it. Why he won’t say. He did say that it is something personal and he will take [...]
Well that didn’t take too long
By: Jeremy |Looks like the first big speed bump on Maradona’s road to the World Cup 2010 has arrived. Despite most people thinking that el Checho Batista and Tata Brown were in, it now looks like they will stay coaching the U-20 and U-17 respectively.
In articles appearing today in La Capital and Infobae, Brown gave an [...]
Diego calls up three local players.
By: Jeremy |Respecting the fact that San Lorenzo and Boca are in a dog fight for the championship, Maradona called up three players, all from other teams – Daniel Montenegro (Independiente), Emiliano Papa (Vélez) and Cristian Villagra (River).
In other news, the Selection gained a position in the latest FIFA rankings, moving up to sixth place.
Central saying goodbye to el Kily?
By: Jeremy |Posts in several news sites today say that Rosario Central and captain Kily Gonzalez are parting company at the end of the season, if not sooner. Either way, I don’t expect to see him back on the field, but you can never tell with Vasco Usandizaga.
It seems that sacking Vitamina Sanchez hasn’t produced the [...]
