Awating the Start of the Diego Era
By: Jeremy | November 19th, 2008Just twenty minutes or so until match time. I’ve got to admit that I am starting to get excited about Diego taking the reins of the Selection. When I first heard the news, I thought it was potentially disastrous, and I still do, but this is Maradona we are talking about here. He can do things that the rest of us mere mortals only dream of.
His daughter, Gianinna, and Sergio Aguero’s wife is having problems with her pregnancy in Spain. This is weighing on his mind and cost him the services of his son-in-law who rightfully returned to Spain to be with his wife. Hopefully he will be able to put that out of mind, as it does seem to not be life threatening to mother or child. Other than that, everything seems to be going his way for his first match in charge.
Although it is a friendly, he is not looking at it that way. “There are no such thing as friendlies, only matches where we will defend the honor of the nation.” That’s got to get you just a little jazzed if you play on the squad, or even just follow the team from back in Argentina.
Looks like the lineup will be: Carrizo; Zanetti, Demichelis, Heinze, Papa; Mascherano, Gago, Maxi Rodríguez, Jonás Gutiérrez; Lavezzi and Tevez.
The only real surprise is Vélez-Sarsfield defender Emiliano Papa getting the starting nod. With Aguero back in Spain, Ezequiel Lavezzi gets the start opposite Carlos Tevez up top.
For the record, Argentina and Scotland are 1-1-1 all-time. 1-1 in 1977 at la Bombonera, 1-3 for Argentina in 1979, in Glasgow, (with Maradona’s first international goal) and 1-0 for Scotland in 1990.

1-0. A positive beginning. It’s always hard to play Scotland in Glasgow. I think first of all Diego needs more time to rebuild the team after long destructive period of some anti-football magicians like Basile

I loved the first half. Especially the first 20 mins or so. Then they seemed to go heavy on defense. But a better showing than the last time out. Give Diego a little more time, and I bet we’ll even see the formation change. But a win is a win. And no one is seriously hurt.

The all-Argentine Copa Suamericana Semi-Final 2nd leg match took place last night and it wasn’t too exciting. Read my match report here.
