Coaches on the Hot Seat
By: Jeremy | March 4th, 2009Ok, looking at the bottom of the table, 2 of the 4 teams (Racing and Central) currently tied on one point have already sacked their coaches. Which leaves Diego Cagna of Tigre and Omar Labruna at Gimnasia (J).
Cagna has proven himself to be a good coach and I think he has the benefit of this season to get things going again and I think that he will.
Labruna, on the other hand, better start winning soon. As in this Saturday away to Huracan. While Tigre aren’t in danger of relegation this season, Gimnasia (J) sit bottom of the relegation table. Just getting to a promotion playoff spot will take a large bit of doing, and escaping the playoff spots seems impossible right now. The club backed Labruna this week, but that is usually more a kiss of death than ringing endorsement.
Adding to his problem is the club’s promedio. If they don’t can him soon, they are most likely stuck with him. If they wait much longer, finding a new coach for a team that is doomed to go down will be, shall we say, HARD. So points in bunches or he’ll find himself out the door soon. Maybe as soon as Saturday if results don’t go his way.
Another guy with a potential bull’s eye on his back is Pepe Santoro. He managed to keep his job by beating a pathetic Racing squad during the derby (thereby costing Llop his), but his job is by no means secure. A couple more bad results and Independiente are liable to open the escape hatch, if he doesn’t do it first. I saw were he said he would step aside for the good of the club if the team didn’t continue improving. That’s usually the mark of a dead man walking.
I think neither one of the last two make it to the end of the season, and probably not even to the halfway point.
