Comings and Goings
By: Jeremy | December 16th, 2008The season isn’t even officially over, and we have already seen a number of coaches go, and a few replacements come. Let’s take a quick look at who’s gone and who’s taking their places.
River Plate: The biggest news was the resignation of Millonario coach Diego Simeone during the season. Nestor Gorosito of Argentinos Juniors was tapped to be his replacement and in his first day has started cleaning house.
Argentinos Juniors: Now that River has come calling and Gorosito moved on to the meat grinder that is River Plate, los Bichos need a new coach. Among the possibilities are Claudio Vivas and front runner Claudio Borghi, an ex-Bicho and a coach who won four straight with Colo Colo. Last season he resigned from Independiente near the end of a losing season. As a player, he won two titles with Argentinos. According to the press, he has been offered the job and they are awaiting his response.
Velez-Sarsfield: Hugo Tocalli resigned after a season that saw Velez under perform expectations. His replacement, Ricardo Gareca, will take over on January 5th, when the players return from vacation. He is currently the coach at Universitario de Deportes, champs of the Peruvian Apertura in 08.
Newell’s Old Boys: Following the defeat of president Eduardo Lopez in the presidential elections held on Sunday, Fernando Gamboa decided to follow him out of the door after a successful first season in Rosario. Something about loyalty to the man who brought him in. Possible successors are Ramon Cabrero and Claudio Vivas.
