Fight for the Title
By: Jeremy | December 3rd, 2008Two games to go, and Boca Juniors are in the driver’s seat to win their 23rd Argentine championship. All they have to do is win the last two and bring the title back to La Bombonera.
Lanus, still alive but four points adrift need a lot of help. Namely Boca would have to collapse over the final stretch of the season. Going back to the Apertura 2006, Boca had a four point lead with two games to go and lost the championship. I think that was the season they were talking about getting to 50 points, but then went into a tailspin.
A Boca win next week and they are mathematically eliminated, regardless of what they do in their match at Velez.
Tigre and San Lorenzo both sit two points back, and are in much better shape than Lanus. A Boca loss in either of the two last games and these teams have a legitimate shot at the title.
Of the three with legitimate chances, Boca has the hardest draw with a match away at Gimnasia (LP) who currently sit seventh. San Lorenzo is at home to Indpendiente, who sit 15th. They also have the advantage of starting their match after the other two have played on Sunday.
Tigre gets a road trip to Rosario to face Rosario Central, who are only two points from dead last. Tough to decide between those last two games as to which is the easiest.
