How Things Stand

By: Jeremy | May 25th, 2009

Well, the games are over and only four weeks of matches remain. The top three all won, while fourth place colon only managed a draw against a Racing side desperate to pick up points.

Lanus, Velez, and Huracan continue as the top three each one a point behind the one in front of them. Colon’s draw drops them to six points off the pace. While they are still barely alive, the draw put a huge dent in any title hopes they had, as a matter of fact it pretty much ripped their hopes in half. With 12 points left in play, picking up seven to win the title is going to be difficult to say the least.

River and Estudiantes also managed to win their respective matches, but their title challenges are effectively over since they are both eight points behind Lanus. Gaining nine points over four matches isn’t going to happen.

The other end of the table saw a big change as Gimnasia (LP) beat San Martin (T) on the road 1-0 to trade places with the San Martin and move out of the last direct relegation spot and into a play-off spot.

Rosario Central lost while Racing drew, leaving Central four points adrift of Racing and safety. Gimnasia (J) continued rooted to the bottom of the table and have no hope of climbing out of a direct relegation spot.

Game to watch this weekend is Racing Club vs Gimnasia (LP) in a relegation battle.
