Know the Candidates - Diego Maradona
By: Jeremy | October 24th, 2008I probably don’t need to say much about him. He is universally known to soccer fans and non-soccer fans. Let’s see. World Cup winner and runner up. Seria A winner, UEFA Cup winner, Primera A winner, Copa del Rey, Copa de Italia, I’m sure there are more.
For FIFA, the greatest footballer ever (tied with Pele). For me one of the top three all time (I don’t rank them since it is too hard to decide) so in no particular order Maradona, Pele, Garrincha, Puskas - I know that is four, but they are still my top three.
As a manager he had two spells in charge - one in Textiles Mandiyu and the other at Racing Club. Neither did anything to convince anyone that he was a particularly good manager.
I rank him well after Bianchi and Batista and even Russo. One day he will coach Argentina, but this isn’t the time, during a qualifications that could still go bad. Give it to him after the World Cup when the pressure will be less. Let him build a winning team with some time. Unfortunately, that is the one thing Argentina does not give its coaches. Giving him the job now would be disastrous for Argentina and Diego.

I couldn’t agree with you more about Diego. I love what he did for our country in 1986, but now is not the time. He needs to cut his teeth somewhere else as coach. The national team is not the place to start.

Does it make me blasphemous to think he will never have what it takes to be a good coach?

I don’t think its blasphemy north of the River Plate, but I’m not so sure about in Argentina. While I think he will get the chance, I wonder if he will make good on it.
