Know the Candidates - Miguel Angel Russo
By: Jeremy | October 23rd, 2008His name has been linked heavily with the opening for the Selection and he seems to be one of the favorites. His managerial career has included multiple stops in Argentina, as well as Chile, Spain, and Mexico.
He was named to the 1986 World Cup squad, but injuries kept him back in Argentina during the finals. As a player he won two titles with Estudiantes.
His managerial accolades are relatively sparse for all the furor about him taking the national team reins. Two Primera B tiles, a Primera A title with Velez Sarsfield and a Copa Libertadores with Boca Juniors.
His current club, San Lorenzo, sits atop the table with a five point cushion on the nearest challengers with nine games to go.

I’m not sure I like Russo. I believe (with his time at Velez as a possible exception to this) that he’s just been at the right place, at the right time. I can’t remember who he followed at Velez but that was his most notable moment in the 2005 Clausura. Since then he’s rode the coattails of Alfio Basile at Boca to win the 2007 Copa Libertadores–a team many believed could have run on auto-pilot in that competition–and now he’s followed Ramón Diaz at San Lorenzo with pretty much the same squad. I guess Russo’s had the fortune to be at the right place at the right time.
Not that he would be an awful coach, because at the end of the day, if he can make a good squad who wouldn’t work for another coach–a coach who was deemed better than him–than in my opinion, there is some merit to being able to handle an unstable locker room and motivate players to work.

Mario Zanabria, I think, was the man at Velez before Russo, now at Real Espana in Honduras.
