Know the Candidates - Sergio Batista
By: Jeremy | October 24th, 2008Currently the Argentine U-20 coach and also the Olympic coach. A teammate of Diego Maradona on the World Cup winning squad of 1986 and runner up 1990.

As a player, he made his name at Argentinos Juniors, where he won a title and the Copa Libertadores. He also managed them on two different occasions. As a manager, his only silverware is actually goldenware, the Gold Medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. While he is being mentioned as a candidate, he is at best a dark horse. But he does have something that no one else can bring to the table - that victory (as manager) in a major international tournament.
Some will argue that the Olympics are a smaller field, and it isn’t a full on National Team. But in his case it basically was, because most of the current National Team was on that roster. And he got them to perform well. Others argue that with all of that talent of course he won the gold medal, he didn’t need to do anything but show up. All that talent didn’t work out too well for Basile, so obviously he knows how to motivate it.
I rank him as my second choice, ahead of Russo and el Diego, but way behind Bianchi.
