La Novela that has become the Selection.

By: Jeremy | November 14th, 2008

Diego wants Ruggeri. Ruggeri wants Diego. Seems like a match made in heaven, except for Don (in the mafia sense, not in the Spanish honorific sense) Julio Grondona. Grondona is vehemently opposed to it. Why he won’t say. He did say that it is something personal and he will take it to the grave with him. He went on to say that the rumors that he didn’t take a call from Ruggeri are completely false. Don Julio said that he actually called Ruggeri, who didn’t answer. So he left a little message- “Men talk before they cry” and then he hung up. Grondona also admitted that there might have been some conversations with Diego through Carlos Bilardo about his possible resignation if Ruggeri isn’t added to the staff.

How is this clown in charge of AFA? While I originally thought this experiment was going to end badly, (and I still do) I am getting excited about the team under el Diez. Give Maradona the chance to hire who he wants. It’s not like Ruggeri is me or anything. He’s a World Cup winner, and for a while was the most capped Argentine. And he was possibly the best defender to play for the albiceleste in who knows how long.

I’m guessing the bitterness is due to some comments made last year by Ruggeri where he blamed Grondona in large part for Argentina not having won the World Cup in 24 years. Will Diego make it to Scotland? I hope so.

Something personal? Sounds silly. I REALLY wonder how it is possibile that “something personal” may decide about future of Albiceleste ;) Mr “something personal” shouldnt be where he is now. It’s not a job for people of his size…
