Measuring Diego’s Success
By: Jeremy | October 29th, 2008Well, now that the unthinkable has become reality, we have to get on with life. I feel like I am going to feel on Nov. 5th, after I wake up and my guy lost the election. Except I won’t be able to say I can’t believe that a crackhead won. And that’s only the President. This is the World Cup, dang it!
Anyway, what will be considered acceptable results from Project Diez? Qualifying? Getting past the group stage? Quarter finals? Semi finals? Finals? Or will Diego be graded on another scale?
Will not having an emotional melt down be judged success? Or a hugely embarrassing scandal (think ‘94)? And can you say international incident?
Just curious as to what others think.

Will Diego lift this again in South Africa (I really hope that is the World Cup and not some other meaningless trophy.)

what i love about the selection of maradona is the hunger he has for the winning the world cup ever since his unfortunate exit in ‘94. this hunger, in my opinion, will transfer to the players and make them play with the killer instinct they’re lacking. i think this drive that he will instill will make up for the tactical problems we’ve been having. if our players played with half the hunger and desire maradona displayed throughout his career we would’ve won a couple of world cups by now. it always frustrates me how we cool down when we score early or think we have the game in the bag. i believe that bringing this winning attitude is what will make the difference needed to win the world cup. i can’t think of any one other the maradona that is capable of doing that… if you’re still worried about tactics then bilardo will cover that

I think that is how Grondona wants it to work out, as do we all. But I just wonder how he is going to react in that pressure cooker. He’s not handled it well in the past. He will instill hunger, but hunger takes you only so far if tactics are garbage. There will be good teams at the WC, almost as talented as Argentina. Hunger won’t be enough. And Diego is just off enough to tell Bilardo where to go if he doesn’t like the advice he is getting, however sound it may be.

What’s the problem with tactics guys? Since 1998 and France triumph nothing has changed in that matter in international football. 1-4-5-1 was the key for France (WC 1998, Euro gold 2000), Greece (Euro gold 2004), Italy (WC 2006), Spain (Euro gold 2008). I think Argentina has got magnificent players for this system.
As about the main question in the article, Albiceleste is in deep crisis right now, so first task should be to qualify
and… to built A TEAM. I couldnt see it under Basile commandment, nor under Pekerman, Passarella, nor Bielsa. Give Diego the chance, because your “tactics prophets” failed since 1994 all the way down… I’m not saying that Diego will make miracle, but avalanche of critics isnt fair right now. I got another question: can it be worse that with Basile? I dont think so.Posted from

Diego will be fine. I figured while living in NY that us argentinians like to lose like the chicago cubs so we have something to complain and talk and figure out who we can blame besides the players.Something to always worry about. Just think Diego cant do any worse!!! they havent won the world cup since he played maybe he should put on cleats while he is on the sideline though

That is a good point about not doing any worse. I’m starting to warm up to the idea of him as coach. He can lose in the quarterfinals with the rest of them, or he can make a deep run. Results since 90 haven’t been spectacular, although he is mostly to blame for ‘94.
