Racing Names New Coach
By: Jeremy | February 23rd, 2009Today Racing picked the successor to Juan Manuel Llop. The man named to save La Academia from relegation is not Diego Simeone or Alfio Basile. Rodolfo Molina and the rest of the board decided to go with a coach with a proven track record of saving teams from relegation – Ricardo Caruso Lombardi.
They also gave some thought to Fernando Gamboa and Edgardo Bauza, so maybe they actually read the Offside because those were my suggestions to Racing after they lost the clasico.
He coached at Tigre, Argentinos, and Newell’s previously, helping the second two escape relegation and helped get the first one promoted to the Primera A.
Gamboa was an early and late candidate, but Molina appeared to have some heartburn about turning over the keys to a man with one season’s experience in the A. And I hear that Bauza would have cost a fortune.
Last night I was penciling Racing in for direct relegation, along with Central, and now along comes Ricky and he’s going to change all that. At worst they win a promotion playoff. At best they finish 14th in the promedios.
Good hire, I think. And the fans agree. He won the poll over at Ole.com with more than 50% of the vote. Time will tell if he was the right choice. I’ll say this, if he keeps Racing up, he will become the go to guy for staving off relegation. It would certainly up his asking rate.
