San Lorenzo Starts Strong

By: Jeremy | December 18th, 2008

Thanks to a 2-1 victory over Tigre in the first game of the Triangular, San Lorenzo finds themselves in the driver’s seat, kind of. Video of the goals after the jump.

The implications for Tigre aren’t good. If San Lorenzo takes any points from Saturday’s tie with Boca Juniors, Tigre is eliminated from the running.

For San Lorenzo, a win against Boca Juniors gives them the championship. A draw means they need a Tigre team without anything left to play for to pull out at least a draw to win the title. A one-nil Boca win would also send San Lorenzo the title, as they would be even on goal differential in the first tie breaker, but have scored one more goal than Boca on the second. Any other Boca victory even by one goal would give Boca Juniors the championship by either winning the second tie breaker on goals scored or the third tie breaker by virtue of having defeated San Lorenzo.

A loss by San Lorenzo on Saturday opens the door for Tigre, who would need a win against Boca Juniors to force all three teams to the tie breakers. That is a bit harder to predict the scenarios, so we’ll wait until after Saturday to see what has happened. Remember that Tigre would win the third tie breaker over either of the others, so if they can get there they win. And tie breakers are the only way Tigre can win know. The loss removes any chance of an outright win.
