The Title Chase
By: Jeremy | May 22nd, 2009Last time out we took a look at the relegation fodder. Now we turn out attention to the top of the table. With five games to go, only one team is mathematically eliminated – Gimnasia (J). That doesn’t mean that all the other are in the running, however.
On Life Support
- Godoy Cruz 20
- River Plate 20
- Estudiantes 20
Eight points down with five to play is a lot of ground to make up, especially since Boca Juniors isn’t the top team this season. While it is possible one of these teams could win out, they still would need a lot of help.
The Dark Horse
- Colon 24
Four points off the pace is not bad, especially considering that this is Colon we are talking about. But with only five to go, it is still a tall order to overtake all three teams in front of them. Don’t count them out yet, but they can’t afford not to take all the points from Racing this weekend. Unfortunately, Racing need those points badly in their effort to avoid relegation, so this could be a potential trip up for Colon.
The Contenders
- Lanus 28
- Velez 27
- Huracan 26
Lanus is top with the other two nipping on their heels, making for an exciting run to the championship. Maybe not quite as exciting as last season’s three way playoff, but exciting still. This week none of the three play each other, but on Jun 21 Lanus play Velez and the following week Velez take on Huracan. I think it safe to say that Velez hold the edge in that if they can beat the other two head to head they should be champs, especially since the other two don’t play each other.
Check back on Monday for the weekend wrap up and title and relegation updates.
