Was Diego Plan B?
By: Jeremy | December 22nd, 2008According to Gerardo Martino, currently the coach of the Paraguayan National Team, he was offered the job by both Julio Grondona and Pedro Pompilio after then coach Alfio Basile resigned. He said he turned it down for ethical reasons because he was still under contract at the time.
I never saw his name in any of the usual places between Basile’s resignation and the run up to hiring Maradona, but who knows. I can see why they would want him. He has Paraguay playing well and their footballing pedigree is just a wee bit below that of the albiceleste.
Of course a lot of things that are said in the media these days are half truths, but I haven’t seen a denial from the AFA just yet.
